Buying a Puppy

Boy or Girl?

A very common question I get asked is should you buy a boy or a girl? Over the years as a breeder, I have also heard lots of different theories/stories/preferences as to why people want a boy or a girl, and at the end of the day it is your decision. But my answer to this question is choose the BREED first, and the PUPPY next, and worry about the gender last. In other words, the puppy's personality, activity level, intelligence, health etc. is going to be mainly based off their breed characteristics, and not because they are a boy or a girl. The puppy needs to fit in with your lifestyle, so you need to do research in to why you think a particular breed should suit you. This is also why desexing your dog is highly recommended, a dogs behaviour can be very much influenced by hormones (well their gender characteristics), therefore removing their hormones, by neutering/spaying will prevent unwanted behaviours coming through, that are related to certain genders.

Another important thing to note is if you have another dog already, is that dogs tend to get along better with dogs that are the opposite sex. Again, if you are desexing your dogs this shouldn't affect things much when choosing your second dog, there are plenty of households with the same gender dogs, but personally as a breeder I have noticed this and research also confirms this.

Waitlists & Choosing a puppy

It is important to know that when you purchase a puppy from us, you can be reassured that your puppy has been bred with the aim of being a genetically sound, healthy and well-socialised family pet. Our puppies are bought up in a rural environment, with plenty of space to run around, and to socialise with other dogs and children on a daily basis.

You shouldn’t take the responsibility of adopting one of our dogs lightly as they will be in your life for the next 10 to 15 years. We only want our puppies to go to the best of homes and will try our hardest to help you determine whether they would be the right dog for you and your family.

Waitlists require no deposits to be placed but we do expect you to let us know if you would like to be taken off a waitlist so the puppy can be allocated to the family next in line.

Paying a deposit

To purchase an available puppy, we require a $500 non-refundable holding deposit. Puppies are allocated in position of deposits placed, and it is important to note that your position will not be secured until you have placed a deposit. Deposits are to be placed via bank transfer.

Due to our quite remote location, it is not always possible for new families to come and meet our puppies. We send a number of photos of each puppy, as well as videos and can FaceTime (via appointment) to give you the best idea of how each puppy looks and what their personalities are like.

Once a deposit has been placed to secure your chosen puppy, we will send regular updates of your puppy.

If you choose to adopt one of our puppies, we hope to have a close relationship with you over the coming years. We love progress messages, and being updated with photos as they grow. We welcome any questions and are always available to give you advice.

Transport Options

We are able to organise puppy transport for our interstate and local buyers who are unable to travel or are too far away for this to be viable. We offer weekly to fortnightly runs to Sydney, that is based on flights we book from Sydney; so this date may sometimes change within 24-48 hours due to flight cancellations. We always prefer to use air freight if the puppy has to go interstate as it is quicker to fly a puppy than go via road transport. Dubbo NSW is always our main meeting point for transport companies (by road). Please note we are nearly 2 hours from Dubbo so we may need a little bit of notice to meet a transport company but always try to accommodate everyone's needs.

Final Payment

Once the deposit is received we do not require final payment (via bank transfer) until pickup. In instances where puppies require shipping, we require final payment for puppy plus the transport the week of delivery. The funds will need to be cleared into our account before we will ship the puppy.

We understand people are sensitive around payments to an unknown source given the many puppy scams that are occurring. We welcome all questions and can be contacted by phone to ease any concerns you may have.

Visitation Rules

Here at Country Canine Co., the health and safety of our dogs, puppies, and staff is our upmost priority. We have an extensive Biosecurity Management Plan in place that we have established according to our our local veterinarian's reccommendation, that covers health and safety measures both within our property and the dogs environment, and also in terms of visitation policies we have of people wanting to view or my our puppies.

You may or may not be aware, but Parvovirus is a very common and fatal disease that is prevalent throughout Australia. While all our adult breeding dogs are vaccinated and health checked annually for Parvovirus, Coronavirus (no, not COVID-19, coronavirus in dogs has been around for years and causes gastrointestinal problems), kennel cough and regular worming, our puppies up until 8 weeks old are not protected with any vaccinations and rely solely on the the mother anti-bodies to fight off any diseases presented to them. Puppies are also not immune to Parvovirus until 2 weeks after their second vaccination, which may not be until they are 16 weeks old.

Parvovirus is detrimental/fatal to puppies and a breeding facility, and can last in the soil for years. It can also be carried easily on peoples cars, shoes, and clothing, without them even knowing they have been exposed. For example, you may pull up at a local park or service station where an infected dog has been, has shedded the virus, and you have now picked it up from driving over it in your car. You may have a dog already, have been to a local dog park and you and your dog both been exposed to the virus, not realised because your dog is fully vaccinated and didn't get sick, and than come to visit a puppy before it has had its full course of vaccinations, and consequently infected the entire litter and other litters on the property. Nyngan in particular is an area that is very prevalent with Parvovirus, therefore driving your car through the town to get to our facility can pose a big threat to our dogs and puppies. Kennel cough and Coronavirus (and other parasites) are not as detrimental to puppies but can cause excessive vet bills nonetheless.

Therefore, if you are wishing to visit the puppies, we will meet you at the Nyngan Riverside Tourist Park, that is our family business, where the puppies won't be placed on the ground and we ask for you have to washed/sanitised your hands and have clean clothing and footwear. As much as we would love to meet you and for you to meet your puppy before it arrives, we ask you to respect our wishes in trying to keep our puppies as safe as possible.

We can always arrange a FaceTime appointment with the puppies to help you choose, and we will always send plenty of photos and videos.

Thank you for your understanding,

The Team at Country Canine Co.
