Groodle

My Summary of a Groodle:

I have been breeding Groodles since 2020. Groodles make a great family dog for those families wanting a larger breed dog that isn't too over the top. They are less energetic than a Bordoodle and Aussiedoodle, but being a larger breed they will still like their daily exercise, whether this is going for a walk, playing at a dog park, or playing in the backyard. People in apartments do have Groodles, however I think they enjoy a little bit more space and a backyard is preferable. Being a poodle cross, they will be an intelligent breed and easy to train. Some of my families who have bought a Groodle but are in an apartment have lived across from a puppy park or a beach and take them out a couple of times a day. The first generation Groodles are mostly non-shedding, one or two puppies in a litter may be low shedding and have a straighter looking coat, but I can determine this by around 6 weeks old.

Maintenance Level: Medium
Lifespan: 11-15 years
Weight: 6-12kg (toy or miniature)
Height: 30-40cm
Temperament: happy, loyal, playful
Health Risk: This breed is in the low to medium risk category for developing health issues, the biggest health concern would be hip & elbow dysplasia, however being a cross breed this has a less likely chance of happening than if they were a purebred dog. PRA is another known one, but the parents are DNA tested clear of this.

Behaviour

The Groodle is an intelligent dog that adores human companionship and is suitable for homes with a small to large yard.  They will appreciate regular exercise but will benefit from a walk, especially Groodles living in apartments or homes with small yards. As pups, Groodles tend to spend their time alternating between being active or lazily laying about the house and as they get older more of their time is spent sleeping. Groodles are just as comfortable whether living with an active family surrounded by kids or spending time on the couch with an older family watching TV.

The most distinctive characteristic of Groodles are their temperaments as they are non-aggressive dogs who are friendly with both other animals and are quite tolerant of children rough play.

Groodles of all sizes are well suited to almost any family home. They are just as happy running around and rough-and-tumble life of a young, big family, or the slow paced and quiet life of an older couple. So long as the family has time for love and attention, these dogs will fit right in. Standard Groodles would be happy indoor or outdoor dogs, however indoor would be most suited.

Size

Standard Groodles grow between 25-35kg, and up to approximately 60cm in height. This is comparative to the size of a full Golden Retriever, sometimes slightly taller as the standard poodle may have slightly longer legs.

Grooming

Groodles will shed if they have a coat that is closer to the golden retriever. Those with a fluffy woolly coat usually do not shed and are often tolerated by allergic people. Those with thicker/curlier coats, generally require professional grooming, as well as regular combing and brushing at home. Groodles should be taken to a groomer about every six weeks for a clip of your choice.

Exercise

Groodles require a moderate amount of exercise. A walk or 30-60 minutes of play is recommended daily to keep your Groodle entertained. As Groodles are very smart dogs they require exercise/play and mental stimulation, so it is important to keep them busy. Please note with all puppies (particularly larger breeds that are prone to hip dysplasia), it is usually recommended to not over-exercise a puppy to not put too much stress on growing joints. The recommended daily amount is 5 minutes every month of life (for example, a 3 month old puppy only requires 15 minutes of exercise). Excessive stair use on large breed puppies can also lead to hip and elbow dysplasia. Getting pet insurance to cover hip & elbow dysplasia in your dog is highly recommended.
