Guardianship Program

Please note: We are only accepting Guardian Homes from families in Dubbo, Narromine, Nyngan, Trangie, & Cobar NSW.

Requirements:

  • A backyard with secure fencing
  • Preferably own your home, as rental properties are subject to Landlord approval and may be rejected for pets
  • No entire male dog living on your property
  • Maintain and supply puppy care, grooming, vet appointments and the recommended food, this is at your cost
  • Reside in or within 50km of Dubbo, Nyngan, Trangie, Narromine or Cobar NSW and be available for us to pick up the dog at time of being in season, and just before your girl is due for to have puppies.
  • Provide crate training and house training for your chosen dog
  • The dog is required to have anywhere between 1-4 litters during their breeding life, and once they are finished their final litter with us, we desex them at our cost and they entirely belong to you, and the contract ends.
  • Our guardianship girls are offered free of charge to approved homes, with a small bond to be paid, that will be refunded at the end of the program.

Here at Country Canine Co, we have decided to establish a Guardianship Program for some our breeding girls. Guardianship Programs allow our breeding girls to be part of a loving family environment, which will become their forever home. These programs also enable us to expand our breeding program, while the breeding girls live their best life as part of a caring family, which facilitates us in expanding our genetic pool that allow us to match the best qualities and characteristics in our breeding pairs due to having a higher selection of breeding dogs.

All of our breeding dogs are DNA tested through Orivet, where a full breed profile has been undertaken on them to determine if they have or carry any common diseases relative to their breed. A thorough vet examination is also undertaken annually on our breeding dogs to ensure we are able to eliminate or not continue to further breed any defects (such as heart, knee, hip, and congenital defects). Their temperament is also taken into account, and it is important their puppies start Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), socialisation, obedience and toilet training from a young age.

Roles & Responsibilities as a Guardian

There is a little bit more responsibility in terms of being a Guardian dog owner compared to a regular pet owner. We will undertake an interview and application process with interested applicants to ensure we find the right fit for our dogs and your family. There is also a contract that covers the legal side of being a Guardian that will need to be thoroughly read through and understood by both parties.

It is important to us that our Guardian dog is part of your family, but there will be some restrictions and protocols we ask that you follow for the life of the contract (ie. the breeding life of the dog).

Feeding:

Our Country Canine Co. dogs and puppies are fed Advance dog biscuits, which is the diet you will need to continue with your Guardian dog.

Training:

Your puppy will need to be taught the simple commands of sit and stay, and also be crate trained. This will enable an easy transition back into our kennels when they are due to have their puppies.

Vaccinations & Parasite Control:

All of our dogs are vaccinated with a C7, which covers Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis, Coronavirus, Leptospirosis, and the two strains of Kennel Cough. You are responsible for and need to continue your puppy/dog's annual vaccinations and regular preventative treatment of intestinal worms, heartworm, fleas and ticks.

Vet Care:

It is a condition of our agreement that you only use our nominated Vets, and you will also be responsible for any costs not related to breeding, such as accidents/emergencies, food, grooming, preventative treatments and vaccinations. Pet Insurance is strongly recommended.

Grooming:

Our Guardian dogs will be a mixture of long and short hair, and shedding and non shedding breeds. Non-shedding breeds such as cavoodles, spoodles, schnauzers, will need to be groomed regularly (usually every 6-8 weeks) and also brushed often to avoid matting. The shedding dogs will not require as much grooming, or at all, but regular brushing and nail clipping will be required.

Breeding:

If you receive your Guardian dog as a puppy, she will be matched to a suitable boy and will be mated on her second heat and over 12 months old. Prior to mating, you will be required to take your girl to the vets for a pre-mating health check. A team member from Country Canine Co. will collect her from Dubbo when she is on day 7-10 of her season (from the first day of bleeding), where she will stay with us for 7-10 days for mating. She will than return to you to stay for the next 7 weeks, and return to Country Canine Co. 10-14 days before her due date. She will stay with her puppies at our breeding kennels until the puppies are 7-8 weeks old; once her milk has dried up and puppies have been fully weaned. She will also undertake a post-natal vet check with us before she returns. The Guardian dog will be bred anywhere from 1-4 times depending on current age.

Restrictions:

To keep our puppies and other breeding dogs healthy and prevent the risk of transmitting diseases into our breeding kennels, our Guardian dogs are not allowed to be taken to dog parks or boarding kennels, as these are both high risk areas for disease risk. We offer free boarding with us at our breeding facility if you are needing to board your Guardian dog at any time.

Our Responsibility:

We cover the cost of initial vaccinations and health check, the DNA test through Orivet, and the cost of registration. We have one of the top breeding facilities in the state, and the Guardian dog will spend most of her time in our whelping hospital while she is with us, where she will receive around the clock care and supervision. She is than whelped under full supervision by our senior staff. When the Guardian dog is in our care, they receive as much love and attention they would at your home.

End of Contract:

Once you have completed your contract with us, and the breeding girl has had her last litter, we will organise your dog to be desexed at our cost. Once this has occurred, we will transfer full ownership of the dog to you, and the Guardian dog becomes yours forever.
